Premier league breaks £1billion transfer record mark
The previous record stood at £870 but that proved a child’s play as thirteen premier league clubs broke their transfer record in the 2016/17 season.
Manchester United led the way with a mind-bogglingly £89.4m paid for Paul Pogba to return to Old Trafford after spending four healthy season with Italian giants Juventus.
Leicester City broke their transfer record three times in a singular window when they paid £29m for Sporting Lisbon forward Islam Slimani on deadline day.
According to Deloitte financial analyst, Dan Jones, “As has been the case for a number of years now, the increases in broadcast revenue, with the 2016-17 season being the first of the new broadcast deal cycle, is the principal driver of this spending power.”
The premier league clubs have so much spending power because of the financial strength from the record £5.136bn domestic TV deal, which was more than £2bn larger than the previous contract from 2013 to 2016.
Interestingly, Manchester City shipped out England’s number one Joe Hart, midfielder Samir Nasri, striker Wilfried Bony and defender Eliaquim Mangala.
Chelsea loaned out 38 players – five more than this time last season. Midfielder Juan Cuadrado, who cost £23.3m, signed up to another season at Italian champions Juventus but this time it’s for three years, and £6m forward Lucas Piazon will spend his 2016-17 season at Fulham while Arsenal had midfielder Jack Wilshere join Bournemouth on a season long loan.
Here are some of the biggest deals this window:
